Lookee here, a brand new Mobifier

Yep, that’s right, you asked for it and we did it. We’ve removed our dependency from Google’s mobile transcoder, and added our own fancy Mobifier. Aside from the overwhelming requests we received, we did this for two reasons:

  1. Users, including ourselves, didn’t like to page through results. Although, it sped up load times, we felt that it created an underwhelming mobile experience, having to browse through several pages just to see the info at hand.
  2. Now that the mobification ball is in our court, we’ve added the ability to view RSS feeds as links. Now, don’t go ahead and get all excited about it — we’re not even close to being done with that part of the site. Expect a super-fantabulous RSS solution to come out near the end of March.

Please note that this is just the beginning. The current Mobifier will be tweaked over the next few weeks to decrease load times and make it the best semi-mobile experience possible. That having been said, mobification is just a crutch that we use to allow non-mobile-friendly websites to be viewed on phones. The fact is, so many of the major sites out there don’t have mobile-friendly web pages. Whassup with dat?

We, at Tappity, encourage all website owners, both large and teenie-weenie, to create a mobile-friendly version of their website. We won’t call any of you big dogs out by name (yet) but let it be known that the people want true mobile sites. We demand it! And we’re prepared to set our phones aflame to get it! Well, OK, maybe we won’t take it that far, but it would sure be nice if we could do all the things we do on a computer on our phones.

For you little guys out there, take advantage of the many helper sites that make the mobile web easy and attainable, like Alex King’s WordPress Mobile Edition Plugin. Heck, we use it on this site. Works great.

If you’ve got any other ideas on how people can make their sites mobile: tutorials, links, etc (anything except for mobile transcoders), drop us a line. We’d love to spread the word.

+1. Glad to see someone break free from the Google Mobifier. Any chance you could open that up through an API so others could also pass traffic through it? Seems like that’d be a really useful tool for other sites… very similar to the spirit of Alex King’s excellent plugin.
